I know why your (point and shoot) photos stink
July 10th, 2007For the longest time, I have been somewhat agitated that I could take a camera along on all of my mountain trips. Could not really just means did not want to carry a multi-pound SLR and lens, as most of my trips involve many miles and a good deal of elevation gain. All on foot, of course. So, this last Christmas, my mother asked me what I wanted, and I just had to say, “A new camera!” My mother and I only buy the best equipment, so she got me the latest and greatest point and shoot, the Canon G7. It took me a little while to warm up to it, as I have never in my life used a point and shoot, and it is WAY different from a “real” camera. For one thing, there are a million buttons, and one had better read and memorize the manual before even turning it on. Next, it does not shoot in RAW, so every exposure and white balance has to be perfect at the time of shooting. No room for error! My first trip this year was in February, and I must say that I found the whole point and shoot thing much more difficult than using an SLR. After a few more trips this spring and summer, I now understand why most point and shoot photos are really not good, those cameras are hard to use! Here are a few photos from this year taken with the G7, which thankfully only weighs 12 ounces.
Easy to get a photo when someone (in this case me) is standing still and posing!
This one is taken with a real camera by another famous photographer. Thanks Brian!
